What Should I Expect After My Endodontic Treatment?

Your endodontic treatment has been successfully completed. The root canal system inside your tooth has been permanently sealed; however, the outer surface is currently protected with a temporary restoration. To ensure long-term strength and prevent fracture or decay, your tooth will require a final restoration—usually a crown—provided by your restorative dentist.

Please contact your restorative dentist promptly to schedule this appointment. A full report of your treatment has been sent to their office to assist with your continued care.

As part of your treatment, we also include a follow-up examination to monitor healing. This brief appointment takes only a few minutes, and there is no additional charge for your first follow-up visit. We encourage you to schedule this visit within the next month.

Are There Any Potential Problems After Treatment?

While complications are rare, it is important to be aware of the following possibilities:

1. Lower Teeth – Nerve Irritation

For lower back teeth, the roots may lie close to a nerve that supplies feeling to the chin, lip, and gums. Although your endodontist takes special care to avoid this nerve during surgery, mild irritation may occasionally occur.

If this happens, you may experience:

  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Altered sensation

These symptoms are typically temporary and often resolve over days, weeks, or months. In rare cases, nerve changes may be long-lasting or uncomfortable. If you notice any unusual sensations after surgery, please contact our office.

2. Upper Teeth – Sinus Communication

The roots of upper teeth sit close to the sinus cavity. In some cases, a small opening between the sinus and mouth can occur during surgery. This often heals on its own.

If sinus communication is suspected, we will provide special instructions, including:

  • Avoid blowing your nose for 2–3 days
  • Sneeze with your mouth open
  • Avoid creating pressure in the sinus area

If you notice symptoms such as fluid movement between the mouth and nose, or continued sinus pressure, please call our office.

3. Post-Operative Infection

Occasionally, an infection may develop following treatment. This is usually managed with:

  • A brief office visit
  • Examination of the area
  • A short course of antibiotics

In some cases, additional follow-up treatments may be required.

If you notice swelling, increasing discomfort, persistent numbness, or any symptoms that concern you, please contact Root Care Endodontics immediately. Your comfort and healing are our priority.
